PENANG Starwalk 2008 participants have every reason to complete the 10km event tomorrow within two hours.
Waiting for them after they finish are five motorcycles, 17 air tickets, mobile phones, computer printers and many other prizes in a lucky contest.
A total of 13,885 people have signed up for the walk which will be flagged off at 7am from the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) on Jalan Mahsuri by Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas. Almost 6,000 will take part in the competition category and the rest in the non-competition category.
They have to complete the walk within two hours to be eligible for the lucky contest. The motorcycles up for grabs are the sleek and trendy 125cc (auto clutch) Suzuki Shogun which only hit the market in mid-September, a 125cc Suzuki Step scooter and three 110cc Suzuki Smash Revo.
The air tickets are to destinations like Taipei, Hong Kong, Guilin, Manado, Hanoi, Vientiane, Phuket, Koh Samui, Medan and Acheh. They are sponsored by AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, China Airlines and Eva Airways
Also waiting after the finishing line for walkers are drinks and other refreshments sponsored by Sunquick, Spritzer, 100Plus, Milo, Nestle and Malta Quench.
There will be a two-hour variety show from 8.30am to keep walkers and the crowd entertained before the prize-giving ceremony.
The show, sponsored by DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (DiGi), will feature CelebriTeens Zenny, Saban and Asyraf, DiGi Penang Junior Idol 2007 Bryan Chew, DiGi Superstar Azizi, DiGi-Leo Idol 2008 champion Alvin Chong, the Fu-Yoh Boyz! and belly dancers.
It will be hosted by 8TV celebrity host Baki Zainal.
Making a debut at this year’s Starwalk is a line dance jam session by 500 dancers which will be held at the PISA outer concourse from 8am to 9am.
Another new feature is a fancy dress competition for pre-registered teams, including those from Penang hotels.
Some of the event’s main sponsors will conduct games at their booths including Pallas which will give out shoes, cash vouchers and mystery prizes for its Wheel of Fortune game.
DiGi will conduct non-stop and fun-filled activities at its booth with participants getting the chance to win exclusive DiGi premiums.
Penang Starwalk 2008 is jointly organised by Star Publications (M) Bhd and the Penang Amateur Athletic Association.
The main sponsors are Suzuki, Panasonic, Milo, 100Plus, Coun-terpain, Malta Quench, Pallas, Spritzer, DiGi, Sunquick and Magnum. Red FM is the official radio station.
Participants are reminded to report at the reporting centres early tomorrow to avoid disappointment. The reporting time is between 6am and 6.45am with no extension.
From the starting point, the 10km route will take walkers past Jalan Mahsuri, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and Jalan Tun Dr Awang before ending at PISA on Jalan Mahsuri.
