31 December 2014, Subang: Firefly Airlines, in partnership with The Star Media Group and Malaysia Red Crescent Society, is spearheading the effort to provide rescue and relief flights to and from Kota Bharu, Kelantan and Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu as part of its contribution to channeling emergency assistance to those affected by the floods in the east coast of Malaysia. Starting 26 December, all available seats and cargo space aboard Firefly flights to and from these two airports will be donated and used for the cause.

These are the updates to-date:

  1. 73 tonnes or 73,000 kilograms of donated goods, in the form of dry food, personal care and medical supplies have been delivered to Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu. Representatives from IMAM Response and Relief Team (IMARET), which is a team powered by the Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia (IMAM), Mercy Malaysia and TUDM Oscar are collecting and distributing these items to the various flood relief centers upon arrival at the airports.
  2. 336 medical practitioners from Ministry of Health Malaysia and IMARET have been flown to the east coast to provide medical services and assistance.
  3. Over 200 volunteers consisting of Firefly management and staff, NGOs and private citizens have been working at the three donation centers, namely Subang Skypark Terminal, Penang International Airport and Sultan Ismail Petra Airport, to help pack, sort, label, seal and carry the cargo to prepare them for loading onto the aircrafts.

“Our call for solidarity and donation resulted in an outpouring of support from all quarters. In fact, the donation exceeded our daily cargo capacity despite having a minimum of ten daily flights to Kota Bharu and five daily flights to Kuala Terengganu out of Subang Skypark,” says Ignatius Ong, Chief Executive Officer.
