Subang, 2 May 2009 – Firefly, Your Community Airline commenced its first flight from Subang to the island of Batam, Indonesia today, marking its fourth Indonesian destination to date. Firefly is the only international airline to serve this destination with a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur.
Angelina Fernandez, Head of Marketing & Communications mentioned in the press conference, "Once again we are pleased to further extend our services to yet another new destination in Sumatra. Unknown by many, Batam is a free trade zone since 2007. We are confident that Firefly's direct flight from Kuala Lumpur (Subang) will contribute towards boosting the economy for both Malaysia and Batam. For the Batamese, Firefly will be an affordable and convenient mode of transportation into Kuala Lumpur. Currently, almost 100% of Batamese who travel either for business or leisure only travels into Johor Bahru and Singapore via ferry due to time constraint and cost. This direct flight will give them an alternative option and opportunity to explore other states of Malaysia both for business and leisure".
She further noted that the influx of visitors into Batam is also expected to come from their Thailand destinations, Phuket and Koh Samui, as Firefly also connects Malaysia to Thailand, in line with the airlines' support of the IMT-GT agenda. The launch of Firefly's WOW bargains recently represents value for money packages for Batamese into various holiday destinations in Malaysia and Thailand and also for Malaysians and Thais into Batam.
She added that, "Batam is currently very well known to both Johorians and Singaporeans. The other parts of Malaysia hardly know Batam at all. Together with Batam's tourism board we encourage Malaysians to use Firefly's direct connection to explore Batam.
Tourism Malaysia recorded an average of 23 000 and 25 000 people from Batam visited Malaysia in 2007 and 2008 respectively by ferry. On the other hand, Batam Tourism Board recorded a number of 11 000 Malaysians who goes into Batam via Johor and 55 000 via Singapore. From Johor, the ferry ride is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes and cost RM 69 each way. From Singapore, the journey is at 45 minutes each way at SD48.00 one way. It is estimated that 80% of Malaysians visitors and almost 100% of foreigners travel into Batam via Singapore.
