Firefly Innovates Singapore – Kuala Terengganu Air Services

Kuala Terengganu, 14 July 2009 – Sultan Mahmud Airport Kuala Terengganu today reverberated with the sound of kompang and cultural dancing as passengers on Firefly's inaugural flight from Singapore were welcomed by Menteri Besar of Terengganu, Y.A.B. Dato' Ahmad Bin Said, the Terengganu State Exco members and Managing Director of Firefly, Eddie Leong.

Firefly's thrice weekly flight from Singapore made its first commercial touch-down into Kuala Terengganu at 6.30pm, thus making Firefly the innovator to the air services between Kuala Terengganu and Singapore, the only international route into Terengganu.

Dato' Ahmad's warm welcome was very well received by Firefly's passengers from Singapore, which comprised of the commercial passengers from Singapore and travel agents.

"Firefly is proud to be remembered in the aviation industry to initiate and introduce Terengganu's FIRST international route, another many of Firefly's FIRST achievements. This Singapore – Terengganu route is a giant stride forward for the state's tourism industry that will alleviate the state's economy in general. Terengganu will now be easily accessible for Singaporeans, expatriates working in Singapore and transit passengers. We are investing heavily in the marketing of this route. Our flight will cut down many travelling hours via the conventional transportation," said Eddie Leong, the Managing Director of Firefly, your Community Airline.

This route also strengthens Firefly's network focusing on commuters for business and leisure travelers. "Our favourable circumstance is the code share agreement that we have already acquired with Malaysia Airlines, which helps us in our promotion of ONE destination FOUR countries. With this direct connection into Kuala Terengganu and Firefly’s product of being a FULL SERVICE carrier, the state of Terengganu will certainly experience an upward growth," added Leong.

Firefly has been flying into Kuala Terengganu from Subang since its start of operations in 2007, and is the only commercial airline to provide direct flights into Kerteh. Its airport ticket counter contributes 20% of its total ticket sales in Terengganu whilst 75% is via the internet. The remaining is via the local travel agents on holiday packages.

"Firefly is a FULL SERVICE airline and NOT a budget nor a low cost or a NO frills airline. There is NO extra cost for beverage or snacks. There is also NO baggage handling fees. These offerings are of equivalent to the ones extended by any FULL SERVICE carrier – the international standard of 20kg baggage, assigned seating with complimentary light food and refreshment. What separates us from the other FULL SERVICE carriers is our pricing where we offer low fares that are of value for money with FULL SERVICE carrier offerings."

We are working closely with Firefly Holidays to ensure accessibility to exploit the vast array of tourist havens of peace and tranquility in Terengganu. There are ready made packages available with established resort owned by the YTL Group – Tanjong Jara, Berjaya Group in Pulau Redang; or the Lake Kenyir Resort & Spa; or the Awana Kijal Golf Beach & Spa Resort. Tourists may also opt for their own holiday package to suit their budget or activity as there are a wide range of other well established hotels such as the Primula Beach Resort and Hotel Grand Continental in Kuala Terengganu. Firefly is also promoting its monsoon season packages very heavily especially in the areas of eco tourism.

Leong also extended his deepest appreciation to the state Government of Terengganu for its strong support, participation and encouragement.

The Singapore travel agents will be on a familiarisation trip organised by Firefly and jointly hosted by Tourism Malaysia Terengganu and the State Government of Terengganu. The sponsors for this trip are the Terengganu Equestrian Resort and Berjaya Redang.

The official Singapore and international media and travel agents familiarization trip to Terengganu scheduled on Tuesday 21st July 2009.
