General Information

Kerteh is the base of operations for the oil company, Petroliam Nasional Berhad or PETRONAS. Thus, Kerteh oversee the oil platform operations off the state's coast as well as the petrochemicals production and crude oil refining in nearby Paka. Kerteh is served by the Kerteh Airport.

The airport is owned and operated by PETRONAS, and was built to serve the purpose of airlifting its employee and ExxonMobil employees to their various oil platforms offshore South China Sea. The fixed-wing services are now operating with Firefly Airline scheduled flights ATR 72-500 short-haul aircraft.

Mesra Mall
MESRA Mall, a RM100mil ultra-modern shopping complex, has opened its doors to shoppers in the Kerteh petroleum town.

Built on a 12ha site, it promises to be a new landmark for shoppers and tourists coming to Terengganu.

With Suria KLCC Sdn Bhd managing the operations, the complex is developed by KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd through its two subsidiaries — Metro Kemasik Sdn Bhd and KLCC Projek Sdn Bhd.

Kumpulan KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Hashim Wahir said with the opening of the complex, people around Kemasik, Paka, Kerteh, Kijal and Chukai would no longer need to go to Kuantan or Kuala Terengganu to buy basic needs.

The Ma'Daerah Turtle Sanctuary
The Ma'Daerah Turtle Sanctuary located in the district of Kemaman, lies within the Paka-Kerteh rookery and has always been an important turtle nesting beach. It is an important place for all four species of marine turtles found in Malaysia.

This turtle rookery is well hidden away in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Due to rampant coastal development within the past 30 years, the numbers of nesting turtles have reduced significantly. In June 1999, the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, BP and WWF-Malaysia decided to turn the sanctuary into a model turtle conservation centre in Malaysia. Education and awareness programs are also available at this sanctuary especially for the local schoolchildren and community. The program is funded by BP and NOKIA.

School children from Kerteh and the surrounding areas enjoy regular education and awareness activities as well as Kids’ Camps. These activities were later widened to include the local community living within the nearby Paka, Kerteh and Kemasek areas.
